One Room Challenge: Porch Makeover, Week 2

Welcome back for Week 2 of the Spring 2015 round of the One Room Challenge, where I'm joining over 150 other design bloggers to transform a room over a six week period. If you're just tuning in, you can catch up on Week 1 here. For this round, I've decided it's time to update my front porch.

Before we jump into this week, I want to thank everyone for all the encouraging and positive comments last week. Even though I haven't gotten around to replying to all of them yet, please know that I read and appreciate every one of them.

The One Room Challenge always coincides with my quarterly business trip to New York so I didn't make any real progress this past week. As a matter of fact, I am typing this from the beautiful Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, designed by Sean MacPherson. I'll be sure to do a post about it when I'm back. He also did the The Marlton hotel, which I wrote about here. Anyhow, I digress. Getting back to the ORC, since last week I shared my design board and inspiration, I thought I would use this week to show you the space and to discuss my plan.

Here is what I'm working with:

Ugly brown paint, matching ugly brown window trim and door, a mailbox missing its lid. More photos to follow, but first, a reminder of my plan:

And a few more pics of the space that will be transformed:

Are you still with me? Good. Here's my to-do list:

1. Clean! It's sooo dusty. I'm hoping the curtains help keep a lot of the dust and debris off the porch that accumulates as a result of all the traffic and buses going by (did I mention I live on a major/busy street?).

1. Paint. As I mentioned last week, I'm painting the ceiling in black and white stripes, and I'm thinking of black for the columns, which will border the white curtains nicely. I've decided on blue for the porch floor, stairs and railing. The kind of blue I want has lots of grey and maybe a little teal. Here are some contenders:

Hague Blue, Farrow & Ball:
 Indie Go-Go, Benjamin Moore:

Washington Blue, Benjamin Moore:

Back to the to-do list:

2. Buy furniture, curtains, rug, stool, toss cushions, string lights, plants. Luckily, I already have everything sourced. :)

3. DIY a coffee table. You see, I really, really love this coffee table from West Elm, but it's too big. I need something rectangular and narrow, otherwise I'll be leaping like Superman over it to get to my front door. How hard can it be to nail some wood together and tile the top of it? I know, famous last words.

4. Style and photograph

It all sounds so easy with relatively few things to do...am I missing something?! Even if it really is this simple to pull together, I know I'll be scrambling and getting it all done mostly towards the end.

See you next week! In the meantime, be sure to visit Calling It Home to see the progress the other participants have made - click here for the 20 sponsored designers (the Wednesday group), and here for the linking participants (the Thursday group).
